First U.S. FACE transplant!

About two weeks ago, the first U.S. face transplant occurred. Yes, that's right, FACE transplant.

This surgery was to replace nearly 80% of a womans face. This including bone, teeth, muscle, nerves, and blood vessels. The woman getting the face transplant, had taken severe facial trauma. However, they didn't release the reason why she had gotten this much damage. But, they did say, that the damage was so sever she had lost an eye, nearly her whole nose, and her upper jaw and couldn't smile properly anymore. She had lost her ability to breathe, smell, and taste.

This was the first operation of this kind in the U.S. However, this was only the fourth to happen in the world. The first worldwide took place in France, 2005, where a woman had been so badly damaged by her dog, that she need a new face. In 2006, Chinese doctors replaced the face of a man, who had been mauled badly be a bear. And again in 2007, another French team did a transplant on a who suffered from von Recklinghausen disease, which deforms the face.

To no surprise, this procedure causes some kinda of controversy. People are saying that because a facial wound is not life threatening that a whole new face is unnecessary. And, that its like steal another persons face. Which it sorta is.

I have to disagree with those people though. Because, I think that this procedure could potentially bring a safe heaven for people with facial deformities. To all those people who are made fun of by everyday society, who are to afraid to step out their front door because of the ridicule they receive. This procedure could potentially help a lot of people.
